Cognitive Bias Modification

Kevin Brough's avatarBalance Your Health

Cognitive biases directly affect the way we perceive and process sensory and memory data. Several types of cognitive biases effect how we perceive, think, and feel (Mathews & Mackintosh, 2000).

The specific types of cognitive biases are:

  • Attention Bias explaining how things are seen, heard, and felt, that individuals subconsciously choose to perceive based on their current paradigm and ignore what conflicts with beliefs (Salemink, Hout, & Kindt, 2007). Individuals delete, distort, and generalize data so it aligns with their biases (Salemink et al., 2007).
  • Interpretation Bias is when the sensory data perceived and accepted is interpreted in a way that fits into or supports one’s biases.
  • Memory Bias occurs when individuals recall prior experiences, thoughts, and imagery that supports their current biases (Hertel & Mathews, 2011)).

More emotional individuals may have vulnerabilities to cognitive biases that contribute to more negative processing of the sensory data available and this contributes…

Free As We’ll Ever Be

release your majestic
“I am free and as free as I’ll ever be” from living in the dark dungeons of active alcoholic.  I continue to be proud of my 4+ years in sobriety and I cherish my strength to continue on down this path of recovery everyday. This song speaks for itself in so many ways and this chorus becomes ‘loud’ in my mind “Just as free, Free as we’ll ever be, Just as free, Free as we’ll ever be Ever be”.
Now I Want You to Remember 3 Quotes about Living Free:
  1. “Live life to the fullest, and focus on the positive” – Matt Cameron
  2. “Live life for the moment because everything else is uncertain!” – Louis Tomlinson
  3. “Nobody gets to live life backward. Look ahead, that is where your future lies” – Ann Landers

Life is a Beautiful Ride

Self Help Survival's avatarSelf Help Survival

“Life ain’t always beautiful, but is a beautiful ride” (Lyrics: Live Ain’t Always Beautiful). Those are powerful lyrics about life and the pursuit of inspiration / happiness.

“It’s not going to be easy, but it is worth it allows you to think about giving up vs. making a change in your life. Giving up is initially the easier road, but by flying away (Fight vs. Flight) from your problems will not solve the adversity in life.

You are given a beautiful ‘ride’ on this earth and it is important to make the best of it, because tomorrow is not guaranteed (cliche, but true). I believe running from problems / adversity causes more anxiety then facing the challenges / struggles at that moment (if you have a clear mind away from substances).

Do you attempt to solve problems with the ‘fight vs. flight’ approach? What solutions to your problems are derived…

HRP Elements 3

Nature combines the elements of Earth, Water, Fire, and Wind to create beauty and abundance in a self sustaining bio diverse way. Through exposure to light and air growth occurs.

Humansthrive in a similar fashion! Through accessing and using innate resources combined with breath and light, growth and contribution will manifest. When an individual chooses to live in a healthy self sustaining way resources are built, not burned. Wake up! Revive from unconscious living and reclaim who you are, full purpose, and deep meaning.

Be your true self, “the world needs you”. Human diversity is necessary for the self sustainability of humanity. The sacred tree of life will grow and nurture all, as we live in a more symbiotic manner.

Reclaim Yourself and Revive Your Life!
As we revive mother earth and return natural bio-diversity to the land, the work and intent also touches and revives the “Soul” of…

Standing in awe, rather than judgment

Jason Schwartz's avatarAddiction & Recovery News

awe

. . . the measure of our compassion lies not in our service of those on the margins but in our willingness to see ourselves in kinship. And so that means the decided movement towards awe and giant steps away from judgment.

So how can we seek really a compassion that can stand in awe at what people have to carry rather than stand in judgment at how they carry it? And I think that’s sort of the key here. That’s the place of health in any community, forget Christian community. In any community, that’s how you know that you’re healthy.

Inventory of Life and Self Reflection

Today is the beginning of my work week, as I had yesterday off because of Memorial Day to Remember the Brave Men and Women who have Served and who continue to Serve to Protect this Great Land (United States of America.

I woke up at 4:40 AM and have been sitting on my front porch listening to music since around 4:50 AM.  As a teacher, even thinking about all of the paperwork and things I have to teach / get done the last couple weeks of school can be overwhelming, that’s only if I let it be overwhelming.

As a teacher for thirteen years, I have the experience to, in theory, take one situation, deadline, event at a time and attempt to stay balanced. As a recovering alcoholic, the end of the school year (as a teacher) is one of my toughest times to stay focused on my…

Coming out of the closet

feelingmywaybackintolife's avatarfeelingmywaybackintolife

That was a strange dark night with a silver lining yesterday. I think I’ve got it worked out: I am not depressed, I am shamming.

Yes, I do have a whole lot going on, but I am thinking the reason I’m not getting ahead with some points is because I have excuses for everything. ‘Not being able to’ and ‘depressed’ is the main. Always has been since, wow, since early age but mostly since I got shunned at school for publicly exposing people who were stealing from the student activity fund. They stole money, sold tickets to a humongous party we had organised (5000 kids) on the black market, making 20 box a ticket on top of the real price. In the end I think 1000 tickets went for the correct price. It worked out, I was the only one in the student board who cared, all the rest had…
